WHY PURSUE CERTIFICATION

How will IPC certification benefit me / my company?

Overall, IPC certification allows for a better understanding of industry guidelines for meeting proper classification of product.  Other benefits of IPC certification include:

  • Help interpret proper techniques and how they are applied to the manufacturing process
  • Provide a better understanding of industry terms and definitions
  • Satisfies end customers’ requirements for industry recognized certification
  • If in contract manufacturing, customers may require operator level certifications
  • Increased confidence in operator competency
  • Higher quality product
  • Lower cost, increased profit through better efficiency, better quality and higher first pass yields

TYPES OF CERTIFICATION

Certification Levels

IPC offers three levels of certification to accommodate the needs of the market:

-       CIS – Certified IPC Specialist

-       CSE – Certified Standards Expert

-       CIT – Certified IPC Trainer

At the CIS level, a passing grade of 70% or greater is required and the testing is open book.  At the CSE and CIT levels, the passing requirement is 80% or higher, with a combination of open book and closed book testing.  The primary differentiator between the CSE & CIT levels is that there is no requirement for the CSE to teach in order to maintain certification; a CIT is required to train at least 10 students over the course of their 2-year certification.

Certifications are valid for 2 years from the date of issue—students are able to re-certify up to 6 months in advance of their certification expiration, and are not required to take a full class in order to re-certify.  Students may “challenge” the test, meaning that they can participate in the testing portion only; this usually takes place over the course of one business day.  We also offer a “hybrid” version where we do a comprehensive review and test.

Descriptions of each level certification according to the IPC website are below:

  • Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) - CIS training and certification is appropriate for any individual that will benefit by having a consistent understanding of the criteria in a standard. Line operators, engineers, quality engineers will find this training and certification beneficial for their knowledge in the electronics industry.

  • Certified Standards Expert (CSE) - The Certified Standards Expert (CSE) is a subject matter professional with a high level of knowledge and understanding of a specific IPC standard or group of standards. The role of the Certified Standards Expert may vary by organization.

  • Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) - The Certified IPC Trainer is a subject matter expert who will train others to the CIS level.  All CIT’s must train at least 10 CIS students in their 2-year certification period.
