Procedures for rework, modification, and repair of electronic assemblies.

Learning objectives

Perform component rework and PCB repair per IPC-7711/7721
Remove and replace through-hole and surface-mount components
Repair laminate, conductors, lands, and plated holes
Remove and replace conformal coating
Select the appropriate rework method and tooling for each task
Meet class 1, 2, or 3 requirements for rework and repair
Prepare for the IPC-7711/7721 certification exam (includes hands-on)

Prerequisites

Rework and repair is hands-on intensive — soldering experience is strongly recommended.

Ability to read and understand technical documents in English
Visual acuity to distinguish fine detail and color (corrective lenses or magnification permitted)
Prior soldering experience (J-STD-001 or equivalent recommended)
Manual dexterity for fine rework tasks

Full certification includes the standard/textbook, workmanship kits, and exam. Recertification is exam-only (no textbook/kits), Tue–Fri.

CIS: Operators & technicians — working proficiency in the standard.
CSE: Lead techs / referees — deep knowledge, not training others.
CIT: Certified to train others to the CIS level.
Recertification (Challenge test): Renew a current certification by exam only, scheduled midweek.
